Our Practice
Physiatry is the medical specialty concerned with the medical treatment and rehabilitation of persons with variety of physical problems and associated disabilities. Those include general medical conditions, neurologic disorder such as stroke, amputation, spinal cord injury, acquired brain injury, arthritis, soft tissue injuries and musculoskeletal pain syndromes.

What is a Physiatrist?
Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation (PM&R) physicians, also known as physiatrists, treat a wide variety of medical conditions affecting the brain, spinal cord, nerves, bones, joints, ligaments, muscles, and tendons.
​
PM&R physicians are medical doctors who have completed training in the specialty of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation (PM&R), and may be subspecialty certified in Brain Injury Medicine, Neuromuscular Medicine, Pain Medicine, Pediatric Rehabilitation Medicine, Spinal Cord Injury Medicine, and/or Sports Medicine.

Jonathan Hawkeswood
MD, FRCPC
Dr. Hawkeswood originally hails from Windsor, Ontario, having moved to BC at the age of 19 to attend UVic. He completed UBC (Vancouver) medical school and post-graduate residency training, mainly at St. Paul’s, Vancouver General and GF Strong. His clinical interests include orthopedic rehabilitation at NRGH, a general physiatry practice of adults and pediatrics in the Nanaimo office, plus medical legal assessments both locally and in Vancouver.
Julian de Ciutiis
MD, FRCPC

Dr. de Ciutiis completed his undergraduate medical education and residency at the University of Saskatchewan, his home province. His involvement in sports and athletics drew him to the specialty of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation. His clinical interests include general physiatry, concussion and mild TBI management, and pain medicine.
Tasha Koryzma
Office Manager

Tasha is the Island Physiatry office manager. She also operates as an MOA (medical office administrator) for Dr. Hawkeswood. Tasha loves weekends and enjoys spending this time with her friends and family.
